Walk to San Martino Ruins

"It is called San Martino, I have lived here for the past sixty years and have always seen it like this!" this is what said to us by an old lady of Fara Sabina regarding the ruins that one may see on the summit of Monte San Martino, just in front of the town.
We have nonetheless, so far, been incapable of finding further news regarding this imposing construction: the architecture reminds us of a romanic abbey, but why would they have built in such an isolated place a church this size (even much bigger than the Abbey of Farfa).
Monte San Martino has yet another peculiarity: a panorama that covers half of the Sabina and all of the magnificent valley of the Farfa, all the way to the Tiber.
The walk we suggest is, distance wise, very short, but the route is rugged and very steep, therefore 20-40 minutes are necessary both on the way up and returning. The route is completely in the sun, it is therefore a wonderful walk to in the colder months or in the summer evenings.
Leave the car in localita' Quattro Venti, the crossroad where, along the street from Coltodino and Farfa-Toffia, there is the deviation for Fara Sabina.
The route is on the opposite side from the road for Fara Sabina and one may easily see it as it goes uphill and disappears behind some brooms. This route will take you directly to the ruins.
On the top enjoy the view and exploring the ancient ruins.
